FEBRUARY 2010
It’s back to school time again, a time of new beginnings and an excellent opportunity for students to put the misfortunes of 2009 behind them and start afresh. Many students go back to school with a spring in their step keen to start off on the right foot. The hard part for parents though is maintaining their enthusiasm and work ethic. There are several things that both parents and students can do to make schoolwork and homework easier:
  • Encourage your child to be organised. Bags should be packed the night before so that equipment is not forgotten in the rush to get out the door. Make sure they have a good supply of stationery basics especially pens and paper.
  • Have a routine for after school which includes some relaxation time.
  • Make sure homework is completed. Set an area aside for this with all necessary equipment (including a jug of water) to limit proscrastination.  If problems arise because of a lack of understanding then make your child responsible for finding out the answer. Why not contact The Online Tutor for help. Your child won’t be embarrassed to ask questions in front of their friends, can keep their lunch time for socialising and will stay on top of their work.
  • Start a dialogue with your child’s teacher if you have concerns about their organization, classwork, homework or behaviour. Don’t wait until parent/teacher night or report time to find out that your child isn't keeping up with the coursework and needs to go back to basics.
